Dall’s porpoise catch statistics were initially reported to the Scientific Committee of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), however since 2000 Japan has refused to do this, or to allow its scientists to take part in the Scientific Committee’s work on small cetaceans, in protest at the IWC’s Resolution on Dall’s porpoise in 1999 and its attempts to provide advice on Japan’s small cetacean hunts. The following data were reported in an assessment posted on the Fisheries Agency website (Iwasaki, T. 2008 Dall’s porpoise assessment by National Research Institute of Far Seas Fisheries (Japanese only).

NB these figures do not include porpoises that are struck and lost, or those killed accidentally in fishing gear.
