For at least a quarter of a century the Dall’s
porpoise has suffered the same appalling over-exploitation
that caused the collapse and near extinction of so
many great whale populations around the world. We
need your help to stop this senseless slaughter.
One of the main reasons these large scale hunts are
able to continue is that small cetaceans such as Dall’s
porpoises were not included in the International Whaling
Commission (IWC) ban on whaling, implemented in 1986.
Each year EIA and Campaign Whale send a team of campaigners
and scientists to the IWC to raise awareness of the
Dall’s porpoise hunt and campaign for their
protection.
It is international attention to this hunt that has
helped persuade Japan to recently conduct new abundance
surveys and reduce hunting quotas two years in a row.
These are small but positive steps - more needs to
be done.

There are many ways you can get involved

government officials to urge that
they end the Dall’s porpoise hunt
(contact
us if you would like us to send some suggested
text):
- Contact Japan’s
Ministry of Health to urge that
they prohibit the sale
of all toothed whale, dolphin and porpoise meat
and blubber due to
their high levels of mercury and PCBs.
- Send the link for
